fighting for Belgium, or let them tell any other lie, that will not alter the case. Otherwise, why should most of the English newspapers advertise over and over again "Capture of German-Austrian trade," and why should the German-Austrian firms in the Colonies be liquidated, or, to use a less euphemistic expression "Why should they be robbed?"

No honest person, no matter of what nationality, can look upon England as a civilized nation after all her criminal actions in this war, and let me assure you that I should never think of living on British territory again, as I have done for many years. What happens to Germany now, may happen to any other nation sooner or later, and I should not feel that my person or my property was safe.

You may ask me why Germany does not find more sympathy among the neutrals? The explanation of this is very simple. England has been working hard for more than 10 years to bribe the Press of most neutral countries, in order to discredit Germany in the eyes of the world, and with great success too. may take my own country as an example. I am glad indeed I am not an Englishman, for I should be thorough- ly ashamed of my country if I were.

Mr. Sanders also speaks of Prussian Militarism! To tell you the truth, I do not know what it is, unless it means a reference to Germany's powerful army. Well, is it not natural that a country, particularly one in such a dangerous position, should have a strong army for its defence? Where would Germany be to-day if she had not a strong army? And have not Russia and France strong armies too? And is there no Marinism in England on account of her strong fleet, and does England not try to move heaven and earth in order to create militarism?

When the newspapers write or the British states- men speak about Militarism, they know they are writing and talking "rot" but the silly public will listen.

With regard to the Proclamation dated 8/9/14 quoted in Mr. Sanders' Shanghai correspondence, does he seriously believe it to be correct? That would be an insult to his intellect. Please tell him from me that he may safely take it as a falsification or one of those stupid lies which one finds by dozens in papers of the type of the "Times," "Daily Telegraph," "Daily Mail," &c. &c., which every self-respecting person ought to be ashamed to read.

I have started a collection of these lies, and am sure that after the war is over you will not find many people, excepting the owners and editors of those papers, who will not feel deeply ashamed of ever having read such rubbish. The other day a friend wanted to lay me a wager that if he should write to one of those papers that since the outbreak of the war most of the babies born in Germany and Austria were afflicted with de- formities, they would publish it. And I almost believe they would. It is simply an insult to the common sense of the nation to feed them with stupid lies. Let them lie if they think they must, but not in such an ex- tremely silly way.

Not long ago I saw a picture in a Russian paper under the heading "Plundering German Officers", show- ing three young officers carrying gold and silver cups. It proved to be a copy from a German paper which had published the photograph of these three officers after they had won the prizes in the great Army Race in Berlin in June 1914. And take all the lies of hysterical

nurses &c. &c., and last not least the official lies!

However, it would lead too far if I were to try to tell you only one per cent of the lies I have been reading. The result is that there are very few English papers I am able to read as most of them cause me a sickening feeling. My doctor tells me it is the effect of having read too many disgusting lies which upsets the nervous system of some people.

I hope that this war will not last too long and that the English nation will recover from the state of demen-
